Michael hails from a small town in West Virginia where he grew up hiking and backpacking in the Appalachian Mountains. His early career balanced bi-vocational roles in youth ministry and pastoral leadership in small churches with full time positions in such eclectic areas as GIS Tech at his county’s Planning Commission, Vice-Principal of a Christian K-8, Marketing and Development Director for World Vision Appalachia and GK-12 Fellow for the National Science Foundation. Along the way he picked up a Master of Divinity, a Master of Arts in Education and a PhD in Human Geography. In 2008 he and his family abandoned their Appalachian roots to settle in Edmonton, Alberta where Michael became Assistant Professor of Geography and Director of the Environmental Studies Program at The King’s University. In 2012 he was seconded as Director of Development at King’s while remaining on faculty and in 2015 was promoted to Vice-President of Student Life and Dean of Students. In 2020 he returned to faculty for a sabbatical and an opportunity to spend more time practicing his love of teaching and research.

The last time I had a blog the year was 2007. I was finishing my Ph.D and serving as an Interim Youth pastor in the church in which I was raised. It was called “The Over-Educated Youth Pastor,” and in it I wrote commentary on a wide variety of topics. I just tried to find it and it looks as though it has been deleted into the annals of history. Just as well – it was probably cringe-worthy. Now in 2020, in the context of a pandemic, I’m jumping back into the game. I’m not entirely sure where this will go, but I’m enthusiastic to find out. I’ve been providing book recommendations for the past few days on FaceBook, and due to a glitch some of my posts were deleted as SPAM. FaceBook fixed the problem, but not before I had bought the michaelferber.ca domain and started building this site. So, here we are. Back on the web blogging. Let’s see what happens.
